Tom Yum Soup is a famous Thai hot-and-sour soup known for its bold flavors from lemongrass, lime, chili, and herbs. It’s light, aromatic, and usually made with shrimp (Tom Yum Goong), though chicken or mushrooms can also be used.


Ingredients (Serves 2–3)

  • 2 cups shrimp (peeled, deveined)
  • 4 cups chicken or seafood broth
  • 2 stalks lemongrass (cut and crushed)
  • 3–4 kaffir lime leaves (torn)
  • 3 slices galangal or ginger
  • 2–3 Thai chilies (crushed)
  • 1 cup mushrooms (sliced)
  • 2 tbsp fish sauce
  • 1 tbsp lime juice
  • 1 tsp chili paste (optional, for richer flavor)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. Boil the broth
    • In a pot, bring broth to a gentle boil.
  2. Add aromatics
    • Add lemongrass, lime leaves, galangal/ginger, and chilies.
    • Simmer for 5–7 minutes to release flavor.
  3. Add mushrooms
    • Cook for 2–3 minutes.
  4. Add shrimp
    • Cook for 2–3 minutes until pink and tender.
  5. Season the soup
    • Add fish sauce, lime juice, sugar, and chili paste.
    • Adjust taste: balance sour, salty, and spicy.
  6. Serve
    • Remove lemongrass pieces if desired.
    • Garnish with cilantro and extra chili.
