Shepherd’s pie

Posted on March 28, 2026 by Admin

Shepherd’s Pie is a classic comfort dish from the United Kingdom and Ireland—hearty, simple, and incredibly satisfying.

🥘 What it is

A layered dish made of:

  • Minced lamb (this is key—“shepherd” = sheep 🐑)
  • Cooked with onions, carrots, peas, and gravy
  • Topped with creamy mashed potatoes
  • Then baked until golden on top

👉 If it’s made with beef, it’s technically called Cottage Pie, not Shepherd’s Pie.

🍳 Basic Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 500g minced lamb
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 2 carrots (diced)
  • 1 cup peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup broth
  • 4–5 potatoes (boiled & mashed with butter + milk)
  • Salt, pepper, optional herbs (thyme/rosemary)

Steps:

  1. Cook onion + carrots in oil until soft
  2. Add lamb, cook until browned
  3. Stir in tomato paste, broth, peas, seasoning
  4. Simmer until thick
  5. Spread into a baking dish
  6. Top with mashed potatoes (use a fork to texture the top)
  7. Bake at ~200°C for 20–25 minutes until golden

🔥 Why people love it

  • Rich, savory, and filling
  • Great for cold weather
  • Easy to make in large batches
  • Tastes even better the next day

🧠 Fun fact

Shepherd’s Pie became popular in the late 18th century as a clever way to use leftover roasted meat.

If you want, I can:

  • Show a quick 15-minute version
  • Give a Pakistani-style twist (with spices like garam masala 🌶️)
  • Or suggest a vegetarian version 🍃
