Scalloped potatoes

Here’s a creamy, cheesy scalloped potatoes recipe—comfort food at its finest 🥔🧀


🥔 Classic Scalloped Potatoes

Ingredients:

  • 4–5 medium potatoes (peeled and thinly sliced)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar works great)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Pinch of nutmeg (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven
    180°C (350°F) and grease a baking dish.
  2. Make the cheese sauce
    • Melt butter in a saucepan.
    • Stir in flour to make a roux, cook 1–2 minutes.
    • Gradually add milk, whisking to avoid lumps.
    • Add cheese, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Cook until smooth and thickened.
  3. Layer the potatoes
    • Place a layer of sliced potatoes in the baking dish.
    • Sprinkle onions (if using) and pour a little sauce over.
    • Repeat until all potatoes and sauce are used.
  4. Bake
    • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
    • Remove foil and bake another 15–20 minutes until top is golden and potatoes are tender.

  • Use thin slices for faster cooking.
  • Mix cheeses for more flavor (cheddar + Parmesan).
  • Add cooked bacon or ham for a meaty version.
  • Let it rest 5–10 minutes before serving so it sets nicely.

Serve as a side with roast chicken, beef, or pork, or enjoy it as a cheesy vegetarian main.
