Grandma’s old-fashioned bread pudding

Posted on April 21, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a warm, nostalgic recipe for Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Bread Pudding—simple ingredients, rich custard, and that cozy homemade feel.

🍞 Old-Fashioned Bread Pudding

🧾 Ingredients

  • 4 cups day-old bread, cubed (white bread or brioche works great)
  • 2 cups milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream (optional, for richness)
  • 3 eggs
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg (optional)
  • ¼ cup melted butter
  • ½ cup raisins (optional)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Preheat oven
Set to 180°C (350°F). Grease a baking dish.
  2. Prepare bread
Place cubed bread in the dish. Sprinkle raisins if using.
  3. Make custard
In a bowl, whisk together milk, cream, eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  4. Combine
Pour the custard over the bread. Press gently so all pieces soak it up. Let sit for 10–15 minutes.
  5. Add butter
Drizzle melted butter over the top.
  6. Bake
Bake for 35–45 minutes, until the top is golden and the center is set.
  7. Serve
    Best served warm.

🍯 Optional Vanilla Sauce (Highly Recommended)

Ingredients

  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup cream
  • 1 tbsp vanilla

Method

Melt butter, stir in sugar and cream, simmer for 5 minutes, then add vanilla. Pour over warm pudding.

💡 Tips

  • Stale bread works best—it absorbs more custard.
  • Swap raisins for chopped dates or leave them out entirely.
  • Add a splash of caramel sauce for extra indulgence.

If you want, I can share a healthier version, a chocolate twist, or a restaurant-style plating idea.
