Southern Hamburger Steak with Onion Gravy

Ingredients (Serves 4)

Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 is best)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs or crushed crackers
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Onion Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1½ cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the patties
    • In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Form into 4 oval or round patties.
  2. Cook the hamburger steaks
    • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned.
    • Remove from skillet and set aside.
  3. Cook the onions
    • In the same skillet, add butter or oil.
    • Add sliced onions and cook over medium heat until soft and golden, about 8–10 minutes.
  4. Make the gravy
    • Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir for 1 minute.
    • Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
    • Simmer until gravy thickens.
  5. Combine and simmer
    • Return hamburger steaks to the skillet.
    • Spoon gravy over the patties, cover, and simmer 10–15 minutes until cooked through and tender.
  6. Serve
    • Taste and adjust seasoning.
    • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or green beans.

Southern Tips

  • Add a splash of milk or cream to the gravy for extra richness.
  • Want extra flavor? Mix a little beef bouillon into the gravy.
  • This dish is amazing over mashed potatoes with biscuits on the side.
