Texas Toast Sloppy Joes

Posted on January 19, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a fun, hearty twist on Sloppy Joes β€” served on buttery Texas toast instead of buns 🍞πŸ₯©πŸ…

Texas Toast Sloppy Joes

Serves: 4
Time: ~30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 500 g (1 lb) ground beef or turkey
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small green bell pepper, chopped (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • 1 tsp brown sugar (optional, for sweetness)
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • 4–6 slices Texas toast
  • Optional: shredded cheese for topping
  • Optional garnish: pickles or fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Cook meat
Heat a skillet over medium heat. Brown ground beef, breaking it apart. Drain excess fat if needed.
  2. Add vegetables
Stir in onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Cook 3–4 minutes until softened.
  3. Make sloppy joe sauce
Add ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and brown sugar. Stir to combine. Simmer 10–12 minutes, until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Toast the Texas toast
Toast or grill slices until golden brown.
  5. Assemble
Spoon sloppy joe mixture over each slice of Texas toast. Optional: top with shredded cheese and let it melt.
  6. Serve
Serve hot with pickles, chips, or a side salad.

Tips & Variations

  • Spicy version: Add a dash of hot sauce, cayenne, or smoked paprika.
  • Vegetarian: Use cooked lentils or plant-based ground meat instead of beef.
  • Cheesy variation: Mix shredded cheddar or pepper jack into the sloppy joe mixture before serving.
  • Meal prep: Make the meat mixture ahead and reheat; toast bread just before serving.

I can also give a slow-cooker Texas Toast Sloppy Joes version for a hands-off approach if you want.

Do you want me to do that?
