🥩 Salisbury Steak (Classic with Rich Onion Gravy)

Juicy seasoned beef patties simmered in a savory mushroom-onion gravy — pure comfort food.


🛒 Ingredients (Serves 4)

For the patties:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • Salt & black pepper to taste

For the gravy:

  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • 1 medium onion (thinly sliced)
  • 1 cup mushrooms (optional but traditional)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • Salt & pepper to taste

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Patties

  1. In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, ketchup, Worcestershire, and seasonings.
  2. Form into 4 oval-shaped patties.

2️⃣ Brown the Steaks

  1. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned (not fully cooked).
  3. Remove and set aside.

3️⃣ Make the Gravy

  1. In the same pan, cook onions (and mushrooms if using) until soft.
  2. Sprinkle in flour and stir 1 minute.
  3. Slowly whisk in beef broth.
  4. Add Worcestershire and ketchup.
  5. Simmer until thickened.

4️⃣ Simmer Together

Return patties to the pan.
Cover and simmer 10–15 minutes until fully cooked and tender.


🍽 Serve With

  • Creamy mashed potatoes
  • Buttered egg noodles
  • Steamed green beans
  • Roasted carrots

  • Add a splash of red wine to the gravy.
  • Stir in 1 tsp Dijon mustard for depth.
