Posted on February 16, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic, hearty Salisbury Steak recipe — tender ground beef patties smothered in rich brown gravy, perfect with mashed potatoes.

🥩 Classic Salisbury Steak

Ingredients (Serves 4)

For the Patties:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: sautéed onions or mushrooms

Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Patties

  • In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Mix gently until combined; don’t overwork.
  • Shape into 4 oval patties.

2️⃣ Brown the Patties

  • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add a little oil or butter and brown patties 3–4 minutes per side.
  • Remove patties and set aside.

3️⃣ Make the Gravy

  • In the same skillet, melt butter.
  • Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
  • Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Add garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Optional: sauté onions or mushrooms in gravy.
  • Simmer 5 minutes until thickened.

4️⃣ Simmer Patties in Gravy

  • Return patties to the skillet.
  • Cover and simmer on low 10–15 minutes, until patties are cooked through (internal temp 160°F / 71°C).

5️⃣ Serve

  • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles.
  • Spoon extra gravy over the top.

💡 Tips

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of soy sauce or a teaspoon of Dijon mustard to the meat mixture.
  • Use a mix of ground beef and ground pork for more tenderness.
  • Make ahead: patties can be formed and refrigerated for several hours before cooking.
  • Leftovers reheat well in the skillet with some additional broth.

If you want, I can also give you a slow cooker Salisbury steak version or a smoky mushroom gravy variation for extra flavor.

Do you want one of those variations?
