potato roll

Here’s an overview of a potato roll and a basic recipe if you want to make them at home:

What is a Potato Roll?

  • A potato roll is a soft, slightly sweet bread roll made with mashed potatoes or potato flour incorporated into the dough.
  • The potatoes give it a tender, fluffy texture and a subtle sweetness.
  • Popular as burger buns or dinner rolls.

Ingredients (makes about 8 rolls)

  • 1 cup mashed potatoes (about 1 medium potato, cooked and mashed)
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ½ cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  1. Activate yeast
    • In a small bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle yeast on top and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Make the dough
    • In a large bowl, mix mashed potatoes, melted butter, salt, and egg.
    • Add yeast mixture and gradually mix in flour until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead
    • Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First rise
    • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1–1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape rolls
    • Punch down dough, divide into 8 portions, and shape into balls. Place on a greased baking tray.
  6. Second rise
    • Cover and let rise for 30–40 minutes until puffy.
  7. Bake
    • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Optional: brush tops with milk or an egg wash for a golden finish.
    • Bake 15–20 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Cool
    • Let rolls cool slightly before serving.

💡 Tips

  • Rolls stay soft longer than regular bread because of the potato.
  • You can add sesame seeds on top for burger buns.
  • Mashed sweet potato can be used for a slightly sweeter, golden roll.

If you want, I can give a super-soft, no-yeast potato roll recipe that only takes about 30 minutes. That one is almost “instant” bread rolls.

Do you want me to give that version?
