Creamy scalloped potatoes

Posted on April 19, 2026 by Admin

Creamy scalloped potatoes are a rich, comforting baked dish made with thinly sliced potatoes layered in a creamy sauce and baked until tender and golden.

🥔 Creamy Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4–5 medium potatoes (thinly sliced)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk (warm)
  • 1 cup cream (optional but makes it richer)
  • 1–2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • ½ tsp thyme or mixed herbs (optional)
  • 1 cup grated cheese (cheddar or mozzarella, optional but delicious)

Instructions:

  1. Prep potatoes: Peel and slice potatoes very thin (about 2–3 mm).
  2. Make sauce: In a pan, melt butter. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  3. Slowly whisk in warm milk (and cream if using) until smooth and slightly thickened. Season with salt, pepper, and herbs.
  4. Layer: In a greased baking dish, layer potatoes, then pour some sauce. Repeat until all potatoes and sauce are used.
  5. Top with cheese if using.
  6. Bake: Cover with foil and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 45–60 minutes. Remove foil for last 10–15 minutes to brown the top.
  7. Rest for 10 minutes before serving so it sets nicely.

The result is a soft, creamy, cheesy version of Scalloped potatoes with a rich, comforting texture.

If you want, I can also show you a no-cream version, a restaurant-style cheesy gratin, or a quick stovetop shortcut.
