Creamed peas on toast

Posted on March 30, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a quick and comforting recipe for Creamed Peas on Toast, a classic simple dish that’s creamy, savory, and perfect for breakfast, lunch, or a light dinner.

Ingredients (Serves 2)

  • 2 cups (300 g) fresh or frozen peas
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (120 ml) milk (or cream for extra richness)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • A pinch of nutmeg (optional)
  • 2–4 slices of bread, toasted
  • Optional: chopped fresh mint or parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook the peas:
If using fresh peas, boil or steam until tender (3–5 minutes). If using frozen, cook according to package instructions.
  2. Make the cream sauce:
In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour to make a roux and cook for 1–2 minutes until lightly golden.
  3. Add milk:
Gradually whisk in milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Cook until the sauce thickens (3–5 minutes).
  4. Combine peas and sauce:
Add the cooked peas to the sauce. Stir gently and season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg if using. Cook for another 2 minutes until heated through.
  5. Toast the bread:
Toast slices of bread to your liking.
  6. Assemble:
Spoon the creamed peas over the toast. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired. Serve immediately.

💡 Tips:

  • For extra flavor, sauté a small chopped onion or shallot in the butter before adding flour.
  • A little grated Parmesan or a dollop of cream cheese can make the sauce richer.
  • This also works as a side dish with grilled meats or fish.

If you want, I can give a fancier version with garlic, cream, and bacon that elevates it into a slightly indulgent brunch dish. Do you want that version?
