Creamed chipped beef on toast

Posted on March 30, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast recipe—a hearty, comforting dish often called “SOS” in the U.S. military:

Ingredients (Serves 2–3)

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk (whole or 2%)
  • 100 g (3–4 oz) dried or salted beef, sliced into small pieces
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 4 slices of bread, toasted

Instructions

  1. Prepare the beef:
If using salted beef, rinse briefly under cold water to reduce salt, then pat dry. Slice into small pieces or strips.
  2. Make the roux:
In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly, until lightly golden and bubbly.
  3. Add milk:
Gradually whisk in the milk, a little at a time, to avoid lumps. Cook, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens (3–5 minutes).
  4. Add the beef:
Stir in the sliced beef. Simmer for 2–3 minutes to heat through. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
  5. Serve:
Spoon the creamed beef over toasted bread slices. Serve hot.

💡 Tips:

  • For a richer sauce, use half-and-half or add a dash of cream.
  • Some people add a pinch of nutmeg or mustard powder for extra flavor.
  • Serve with a side of scrambled eggs or a simple green salad for breakfast or brunch.

If you want, I can also give a slightly lighter, skillet version that uses milk and a little cream without making the sauce too heavy, perfect for a quicker weeknight meal. Do you want me to share that?
