Chili dog

Here’s a classic Chili Dog recipe—juicy hot dogs topped with hearty chili and optional cheese, onions, or mustard.

Chili Dogs

Ingredients (4 servings)

  • 4 hot dog buns
  • 4 hot dogs (beef, pork, or turkey)
  • 1 cup chili (homemade or canned; see tip below)
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • ¼ cup chopped onions (optional)
  • Mustard or ketchup (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the hot dogs
    • Boil: Place hot dogs in simmering water 5–7 minutes.
    • Grill: Grill over medium heat 5–7 minutes, turning occasionally.
    • Pan-fry: Heat a skillet over medium heat, cook hot dogs 5–7 minutes, turning occasionally.
  2. Warm the buns
Lightly toast or steam buns for extra flavor.
  3. Assemble the chili dogs
    • Place a hot dog in each bun.
    • Spoon chili over the top.
    • Sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese and chopped onions if desired.
    • Add mustard or ketchup to taste.
  4. Serve
Serve immediately with fries, chips, or a side salad.

Tips

  • For homemade chili, use ground beef or turkey, onion, garlic, tomato sauce, and chili powder—simmer until thick.
  • Add pickled jalapeños or hot sauce if you like it spicy.
  • Chili dogs can also be baked in the oven with cheese on top for a melty, gooey version.

If you want, I can give a slow-cooker chili dog version where the chili cooks all day, and the hot dogs stay juicy, perfect for a potluck or easy weeknight dinner.

Do you want me to do that?
