🥧 Shepherd’s Pie

Shepherd’s pie is a classic British comfort dish made of ground meat cooked with vegetables, topped with mashed potatoes, and baked until golden. Traditionally, it uses lamb, but versions with beef are often called Cottage Pie.

🥘 Ingredients

Filling

  • 1 lb ground lamb (or beef for cottage pie)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup peas
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or lamb broth
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • Salt and pepper

Topping

  • 3–4 potatoes, boiled and mashed
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ¼ cup milk
  • Salt and pepper

👨‍🍳 How to Make Shepherd’s Pie

  1. Cook the filling
    • Brown ground lamb in a skillet. Add onions, garlic, and carrots; cook until softened.
    • Stir in tomato paste, broth, peas, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer 5–10 minutes until slightly thickened.
  2. Prepare the mashed potato topping
    • Mash boiled potatoes with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until creamy.
  3. Assemble the pie
    • Spread the meat-vegetable filling in a baking dish.
    • Evenly layer the mashed potatoes on top.
  4. Bake
    • Bake at 200°C / 400°F for 20–25 minutes, until the top is lightly golden.
  5. Serve
    • Let rest a few minutes before serving.

🍽️ Serving Ideas

  • With steamed green beans or broccoli 🥦
  • Alongside a simple green salad 🥗
  • With a gravy drizzle for extra richness

💡 Tip: For a crispy top, brush the mashed potatoes with a little melted butter before baking, or sprinkle with cheese.
