🌮 Walking Taco Casserole

Walking taco casserole is a fun, deconstructed taco dish baked in a casserole dish, inspired by “walking tacos” served in bags at fairs. It layers taco-seasoned meat, cheese, and crunchy chips, making it easy to serve and share without assembling individual tacos.

🥘 Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey
  • 1 packet taco seasoning
  • 1 cup salsa
  • 2 cups crushed tortilla chips
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Optional toppings:
    • Lettuce 🥬
    • Tomatoes 🍅
    • Sour cream
    • Jalapeños 🌶️
    • Black olives

👨‍🍳 How to Make Walking Taco Casserole

  1. Preheat oven
    • Set to 175°C / 350°F.
  2. Cook the meat
    • Brown ground beef in a skillet. Drain excess fat.
    • Add taco seasoning and salsa. Simmer 2–3 minutes.
  3. Layer the casserole
    • In a greased baking dish, layer:
      1. Half of crushed tortilla chips
      2. All cooked taco meat
      3. Remaining crushed chips
      4. Shredded cheese on top
  4. Bake
    • Bake 15–20 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  5. Add toppings
    • After baking, add lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, jalapeños, or olives as desired.

🍽️ Serving Ideas

  • Serve straight from the casserole dish
  • With extra salsa or guacamole on the side
  • Perfect for game days or potlucks

💡 Tip: For extra crunch, add tortilla strips on top right before serving instead of baking them in the casserole.

I can also provide:

  • 🌮 Mini walking taco casserole cups for single servings
  • 🧄 Spicy southwest version with black beans and corn
  • 🥗 Low-carb version using lettuce or cauliflower rice instead of chips
