Salisbury Steak Meatballs

Posted on March 14, 2026 by Admin

Salisbury steak meatballs are tender beef meatballs cooked in a rich onion-mushroom gravy, inspired by the classic American comfort dish. They’re great with mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles. 🍽️🥩

Ingredients

For the meatballs

  • 500 g ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp oil (for frying)

For the gravy

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
  • 1 small onion (sliced)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp flour or cornstarch (to thicken)
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the meatballs
In a bowl mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Form into medium-size meatballs.
  2. Brown the meatballs
Heat oil in a pan and cook the meatballs for about 5–7 minutes, turning until browned on all sides. Remove and set aside.
  3. Prepare the gravy
In the same pan melt butter. Add sliced onions and mushrooms and cook until soft.
  4. Add liquid
Pour in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup. Stir well.
  5. Thicken
Mix flour or cornstarch with a little water and stir into the gravy.
  6. Simmer
Return meatballs to the pan and simmer for 10–15 minutes until fully cooked and the gravy thickens.
