Tater tot casserole

Posted on March 12, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic Tater Tot Casserole recipe—comforting, cheesy, and easy to make. Perfect for a hearty weeknight dinner!

Ingredients (serves 4–6)

  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 package (about 32 oz) frozen tater tots
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional: garlic powder or paprika for extra flavor

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven:
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the meat:
    • In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and onions until meat is browned and onions are soft.
    • Drain excess fat and season with salt, pepper, and optional spices.
  3. Mix the base:
    • In a bowl, combine the cooked meat mixture with condensed soup and milk. Stir until well blended.
  4. Assemble the casserole:
    • Spread the meat mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
    • Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheese over the meat.
    • Arrange tater tots in a single layer on top. Sprinkle remaining cheese over the tater tots if desired.
  5. Bake:
    • Bake uncovered for 30–40 minutes, until tater tots are golden brown and crispy, and the casserole is bubbling.
  6. Serve:
    • Let cool for a few minutes before serving.

💡 Tips:

  • For a healthier twist, use sweet potato tots or add a layer of veggies (like green beans or corn) under the tater tots.
  • You can make this ahead and refrigerate; bake a bit longer if chilled.
  • Leftovers reheat well in the oven or microwave.

If you want, I can also give a quick 20-minute skillet version that uses frozen tater tots and cooks entirely on the stovetop for fast weeknight dinners.
