🥧 Shepherd’s Pie
A classic comfort dish of savory meat and vegetables topped with creamy mashed potatoes, baked until golden. Traditionally made with lamb, but beef works too. 🥔🥕
🧾 Ingredients
Filling
- 1 lb (450 g) ground lamb or beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 carrots, diced
- 1 cup frozen peas or corn
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Mashed Potato Topping
- 4 medium potatoes, peeled and chopped
- ¼ cup butter
- ½ cup milk (more if needed)
- Salt and pepper
Optional garnish: grated Parmesan cheese or chopped parsley
👩🍳 Instructions
1️⃣ Make the mashed potatoes
- Boil potatoes until tender (10–15 minutes).
- Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until creamy.
2️⃣ Prepare the filling
- Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook ground meat until browned, then drain excess fat.
- Add onion, garlic, and carrots; sauté 5 minutes until softened.
- Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, broth, thyme, salt, and pepper.
- Simmer 10 minutes until slightly thickened. Stir in peas or corn at the end.
3️⃣ Assemble the pie
- Preheat oven to 200°C / 400°F.
- Spread meat and vegetable filling in a baking dish.
- Top evenly with mashed potatoes, spreading with a spatula. Optionally, use a fork to make ridges for browning.
- Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese if desired.
4️⃣ Bake
Bake 20–25 minutes until the top is golden and slightly crispy.
