🥧 Shepherd’s Pie

A classic comfort dish of savory meat and vegetables topped with creamy mashed potatoes, baked until golden. Traditionally made with lamb, but beef works too. 🥔🥕

🧾 Ingredients

Filling

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground lamb or beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas or corn
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Mashed Potato Topping

  • 4 medium potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • ¼ cup butter
  • ½ cup milk (more if needed)
  • Salt and pepper

Optional garnish: grated Parmesan cheese or chopped parsley

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Make the mashed potatoes

  1. Boil potatoes until tender (10–15 minutes).
  2. Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until creamy.

2️⃣ Prepare the filling

  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook ground meat until browned, then drain excess fat.
  2. Add onion, garlic, and carrots; sauté 5 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, broth, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  4. Simmer 10 minutes until slightly thickened. Stir in peas or corn at the end.

3️⃣ Assemble the pie

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C / 400°F.
  2. Spread meat and vegetable filling in a baking dish.
  3. Top evenly with mashed potatoes, spreading with a spatula. Optionally, use a fork to make ridges for browning.
  4. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese if desired.

4️⃣ Bake

Bake 20–25 minutes until the top is golden and slightly crispy.
