Shepherd’s Pie is a classic comfort dish made with a savory meat filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes and baked until golden 🥔🥧.

Ingredients

For the filling

  • 500 g ground lamb (traditional) or ground beef
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 small onion (chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, corn)
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp thyme or rosemary (optional)

For the mashed potato topping

  • 3–4 large potatoes (peeled and chopped)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ¼ cup milk
  • Salt to taste
  • ¼ cup grated cheese (optional)

Instructions

1. Prepare the mashed potatoes

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water for 15–20 minutes until soft.
  2. Drain and mash with butter, milk, and salt until smooth.

2. Cook the filling

  1. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
  2. Cook onion until soft, then add garlic.
  3. Add ground lamb or beef and cook until browned.
  4. Stir in tomato paste, vegetables, broth, Worcestershire sauce, and seasonings.
  5. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until slightly thick.

3. Assemble

  • Spread the meat mixture in a baking dish.
  • Spoon mashed potatoes evenly on top.
  • Sprinkle cheese if desired.

4. Bake

  • Bake at 200°C (400°F) for 20–25 minutes until the top is golden.

Serving

Serve hot with:

  • green salad 🥗
  • steamed vegetables
  • gravy if you like extra sauce.

✅ Tip: Use a fork to create lines on the mashed potatoes before baking — it makes the top crispier.
