Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

Posted on March 9, 2026 by Admin

Hamburger steak with onion gravy is a comforting dish made from seasoned ground beef patties cooked in a rich onion gravy. It’s often served with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables. 🥩🧅🍽️

Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 500 g ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • ½ onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)

For the Onion Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Cooking Instructions

1. Make the patties

  • In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Shape into 4–5 oval patties.

2. Cook the patties

  • Heat a pan with a little oil.
  • Cook the patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned.
  • Remove from the pan and set aside.

3. Make the onion gravy

  • In the same pan, melt butter and add sliced onions.
  • Cook until onions are soft and golden.
  • Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  • Slowly add beef broth while stirring until the gravy thickens.

4. Finish the dish

  • Return the patties to the pan with the gravy.
  • Simmer for 10–15 minutes so the meat absorbs the flavor.

5. Serve

  • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or bread.

✅ Tip: Adding mushrooms to the gravy makes it even richer.
