Omas Buttergebäck cookies

🍪 Oma’s Buttergebäck Cookies

Classic German butter cookies — rich, crisp, and buttery, perfect with coffee or tea.


🛒 Ingredients (Makes ~24 cookies)

  • 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup (100 g) sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2½ cups (310 g) all-purpose flour
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • Optional: powdered sugar for dusting or chocolate drizzle

🔥 Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat oven

  • 350°F (175°C).
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2️⃣ Make the dough

  • Beat butter and sugar until creamy.
  • Add egg and vanilla; mix until smooth.
  • Gradually add flour and salt; mix until dough comes together.

3️⃣ Shape cookies

  • Roll dough into small balls (about 1 inch) or use a cookie press for traditional shapes.
  • Place on baking sheet, leaving 2 inches between cookies.
  • Flatten slightly with a fork or the back of a spoon.

4️⃣ Bake

  • Bake 12–15 minutes until edges are lightly golden.
  • Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack.

5️⃣ Optional finishing touches

  • Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle melted chocolate over cooled cookies.

  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of cinnamon or lemon zest.
  • Use almond extract instead of vanilla for a nutty variation.
