🥧 Shepherd’s Pie (Classic British Style)

A hearty layered dish of savory meat and vegetables topped with creamy mashed potatoes and baked until golden.

Traditional Shepherd’s Pie uses lamb. If you use beef, it’s technically called cottage pie.

🛒 Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

Meat Filling

  • 1 lb ground lamb (or ground beef)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or lamb broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp thyme or rosemary
  • 1 tbsp flour (optional, for thickening)
  • Salt & black pepper

Mashed Potato Topping

  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled & chopped
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk or cream
  • Salt & pepper

🔥 Instructions

1️⃣ Make the mashed potatoes

  • Boil potatoes in salted water 15–20 minutes until tender.
  • Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper.
  • Set aside.

2️⃣ Prepare the filling

  • Sauté onion and carrots 5 minutes.
  • Add garlic and cook 30 seconds.
  • Add lamb and cook until browned.
  • Stir in flour (if using) and cook 1 minute.
  • Add tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire, and herbs.
  • Simmer 5–8 minutes until thickened.
  • Stir in peas. Adjust seasoning.

3️⃣ Assemble

  • Spread meat mixture into a baking dish.
  • Spoon mashed potatoes over top.
  • Use a fork to create texture (helps browning).

4️⃣ Bake

  • 375°F (190°C) for 20–25 minutes until golden on top.
  • Broil 2–3 minutes for extra browning if desired.

🌿 Flavor Variations

  • Add shredded cheddar on top before baking
  • Mix roasted garlic into potatoes
  • Add mushrooms to the meat filling
  • Swap potatoes for mashed sweet potatoes

If you’d like, I can give you:

  • A slow cooker shepherd’s pie
  • A keto/low-carb version
  • Or a creamy, extra-rich pub-style version

Which one sounds good?
