Ooo yes 😍 crumb cake—soft, buttery cake with that thick cinnamon crumb on top.

Classic Crumb Cake

Ingredients

Crumb Topping

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup melted butter

Cake

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prep
    Heat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8×8-inch pan.
  2. Make the crumbs
    Mix flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Stir in melted butter until large crumbs form. Set aside.
  3. Make the cake batter
    Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt.
    Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then vanilla.
    Add dry ingredients alternately with milk, mixing just until combined.
  4. Assemble
    Spread batter in pan. Sprinkle crumb topping generously over the entire surface—don’t be shy.
  5. Bake
    Bake 40–45 minutes, until a toothpick in the cake (not the crumbs) comes out clean.
  6. Cool & serve
    Let cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar if you’re feeling fancy.

Pro Tips

  • Thick crumbs: Chill the crumb topping 10 minutes before adding.
  • Extra cinnamon: Add ½ tsp more to the crumbs.
  • Bakery-style: Use an 8×8 pan for a taller cake.
