Fried okra

Posted on January 31, 2026 by Admin

Oh yes 😌 fried okra—crispy, golden, and pure Southern comfort. Here’s a foolproof classic.

🌿 Fried Okra (Southern Style)

Ingredients (2–3 servings)

  • 1 lb fresh okra, sliced into ½-inch pieces
  • ½ cup cornmeal
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika (optional)
  • ½ cup buttermilk (or regular milk)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Prep okra
Wash and dry okra. Slice into ½-inch pieces.
  2. Dredge
    • Pour buttermilk into a bowl.
    • In another bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper, and paprika.
    • Dip okra in milk, then coat with cornmeal mixture. Shake off excess.
  3. Heat oil
    Heat ½–1 inch of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat (~350°F / 175°C).
  4. Fry
Fry okra in batches until golden brown, 3–4 min per batch. Don’t overcrowd.
  5. Drain & serve
Remove with a slotted spoon, drain on paper towels. Serve hot.

Pro Tips

  • Dry okra before dredging to reduce slime
  • Extra crunch: mix ¼ cup crushed cornflakes into the coating
  • Spicy option: add cayenne or chili powder to the dredge
  • Serve with ranch, hot sauce, or just plain—classic Southern style

I can also give you an oven-baked version, an air fryer version, or a creamy fried okra casserole 😏.

Do you want me to do one of those versions?
