Posted on April 24, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a simple, comforting cabbage stew you can make quickly with basic ingredients—light, healthy, and perfect with rice or bread.

🥬 Cabbage Stew (Simple Home Style)

🧾 Ingredients

  • cabbage – 1 medium (shredded)
  • Onion – 1 large (chopped)
  • Tomato – 1–2 (chopped)
  • Garlic – 4 cloves (crushed)
  • Ginger – 1 tsp (optional)
  • Green chilies – 1–2
  • Oil – 2–3 tbsp

🌿 Spices

  • Turmeric – ½ tsp
  • Red chili powder – 1 tsp (adjust to taste)
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder – 1 tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Black pepper – ½ tsp (optional)

👨‍🍳 Cooking Steps

1. Start the base

  • Heat oil in a pan
  • Add cumin seeds until they crackle
  • Add onions and sauté until soft and golden

2. Add aromatics

  • Add garlic, ginger, and green chilies
  • Cook for 1–2 minutes until fragrant

3. Add tomatoes & spices

  • Add chopped tomatoes
  • Mix in turmeric, chili powder, coriander powder, salt
  • Cook until tomatoes become soft and oil separates

4. Add cabbage

  • Add shredded cabbage
  • Stir well to coat with spices

5. Cook covered

  • Add a splash of water (¼ cup)
  • Cover and cook on low heat for 10–15 minutes
  • Stir occasionally until cabbage becomes tender but not mushy

6. Finish

  • Add black pepper if desired
  • Cook uncovered for 2–3 minutes to reduce moisture

🍽️ Serving Ideas

  • With steamed rice and lentils (daal)
  • With roti or chapati
  • As a light side dish with meat curries

🔥 Tips

  • Don’t overcook—slightly crunchy cabbage tastes best
  • Add a squeeze of lemon at the end for freshness
  • You can add potatoes or carrots for a richer stew

If you want, I can also make a Pakistani-style spicy cabbage curry, a diet-friendly low-calorie version, or a one-pot pressure cooker method.
