Shepherd’s pieShepherd’s pie

Posted on April 1, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic recipe for Shepherd’s Pie—a hearty, comforting dish with a savory meat filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes. Traditionally, it’s made with lamb, but you can use beef (then it’s technically called “Cottage Pie”).

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

For the Meat Filling

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground lamb (or beef)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup beef or chicken broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme or 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

For the Mashed Potato Topping

  • 2 lbs (900 g) potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup milk (or cream for richer texture)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese for topping

Instructions

1. Prepare the Mashed Potatoes

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15–20 minutes.
  2. Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  3. Set aside.

2. Cook the Meat Filling

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Sauté onion and garlic until translucent.
  3. Add ground lamb (or beef) and cook until browned.
  4. Stir in carrots and cook 5 minutes.
  5. Mix in tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme.
  6. Simmer 5–7 minutes until slightly thickened.
  7. Stir in peas, season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat.

3. Assemble the Shepherd’s Pie

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Spread meat mixture evenly in a baking dish.
  3. Spoon mashed potatoes over the top, smoothing with a spatula.
  4. Optional: Sprinkle cheddar cheese over the top.
  5. For a golden crust, use a fork to make small ridges in the potato layer.

4. Bake

  • Bake 20–25 minutes until the top is lightly golden and edges are bubbling.
  • Let rest 5–10 minutes before serving.

Tips

  • Vegetables: Add corn, green beans, or mushrooms for extra flavor.
  • Crispier top: Brush mashed potatoes with a little melted butter before baking.
  • Make ahead: Assemble and refrigerate for a day, then bake when ready.

If you want, I can also give a “quick skillet shepherd’s pie” version that skips the oven and cooks everything in one pan for a faster weeknight meal.

Do you want me to do that?
