Hamburger Potato Casserole

Posted on March 18, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a hearty and comforting Hamburger Potato Casserole recipe that combines ground beef, creamy potatoes, and cheesy goodness in one dish:

Ingredients (serves 4–6)

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4–5 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup (240 ml) milk
  • 1 can (10.5 oz / 300 g) cream of mushroom or cream of chicken soup
  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika (optional)
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil for greasing

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven:
    • Preheat to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or oil.
  2. Cook the beef:
    • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef with onion and garlic until browned.
    • Drain excess fat and season with salt and pepper.
  3. Prepare the sauce:
    • In a bowl, mix milk and cream of mushroom/chicken soup until smooth.
  4. Layer the casserole:
    • Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish.
    • Spread half of the cooked beef mixture over the potatoes.
    • Pour half of the soup mixture on top and sprinkle with ¾ cup of shredded cheese.
    • Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, beef, soup, and cheese.
  5. Bake:
    • Cover with foil and bake for 45–50 minutes.
    • Remove foil and bake another 15–20 minutes, until potatoes are tender and cheese is golden.
  6. Optional garnish:
    • Sprinkle a little paprika or chopped parsley on top before serving for extra color.

Tips

  • Thinly slicing potatoes helps them cook evenly.
  • You can use Yukon Gold or red potatoes for a creamier texture.
  • Add vegetables like peas or green beans for extra flavor.
  • Leftovers taste even better the next day as the flavors meld.

If you want, I can create a full “comfort food dinner menu” using the recipes we’ve covered—brioche rolls, pot roast, strawberry pie, and this casserole—so it’s perfectly planned for a cozy meal. Do you want me to do that?
