Shepherd’s pie

Posted on March 17, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic, comforting Shepherd’s Pie—a layered dish of savory meat and creamy mashed potatoes baked until golden 🥧

🥔 Shepherd’s Pie (Traditional Style)

Ingredients:

For the filling:

  • 500 g ground meat (traditionally lamb; beef works too)
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 cup mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup broth (beef or chicken)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • Salt & black pepper
  • 1 tsp thyme or mixed herbs

For the topping:

  • 3–4 potatoes (boiled and mashed)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ¼ cup milk
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Make mashed potatoes
Mash boiled potatoes with butter, milk, and salt until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Cook the filling
Heat oil, sauté onion until soft. Add garlic, then ground meat. Cook until browned.
  3. Add flavor
Stir in tomato paste, vegetables, broth, Worcestershire sauce, and herbs.
    Simmer 10–15 minutes until thick.
  4. Assemble
Spread the meat mixture in a baking dish.
Top evenly with mashed potatoes (use a fork to create texture).
  5. Bake
Bake at 180°C for 20–25 minutes until golden on top.

✨ Tips:

  • For a cheesy crust, sprinkle some cheddar or Parmesan on top before baking.
  • Use lamb for authentic flavor; beef version is often called “cottage pie.”
  • Let it rest 5–10 minutes before serving—it holds shape better.

🍽️ Serve with:

  • Simple salad
  • Steamed vegetables
  • Garlic bread

If you want, I can show you a creamy, cheesy restaurant-style Shepherd’s Pie or a quick stovetop version without baking 👍
