🧆 Swedish Meatballs

Swedish meatballs are tender, flavorful meatballs in a rich, creamy gravy, traditionally served over mashed potatoes, noodles, or lingonberry jam. They’re a comforting Scandinavian classic.

🥄 Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

Meatballs

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ lb ground pork
  • 1 small onion, finely grated
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ tsp ground allspice
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg

Gravy

  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Make Meatballs

  1. In a bowl, soak breadcrumbs in milk for a few minutes.
  2. Add ground meats, onion, egg, salt, pepper, allspice, and nutmeg. Mix until just combined.
  3. Form into 1–1½ inch meatballs.

2️⃣ Cook Meatballs

  • Heat a skillet with 2 tbsp butter or oil over medium heat.
  • Brown meatballs on all sides (they don’t need to cook through completely). Remove and set aside.

3️⃣ Make Gravy

  • In the same skillet, melt butter.
  • Whisk in flour to make a roux, cook 1–2 minutes.
  • Slowly whisk in beef broth and cream. Simmer until thickened.
  • Stir in Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.

4️⃣ Combine

  • Return meatballs to the gravy and simmer 10–15 minutes until cooked through.

5️⃣ Serve

  • Over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.
  • Optional: garnish with chopped parsley or serve with lingonberry jam.

🌟 Tips for Perfect Swedish Meatballs

  • Tender meatballs: Don’t overmix meat — keep mixture light.
  • Flavor: Allspice and nutmeg give authentic Scandinavian flavor.
  • Gravy consistency: Adjust cream or broth to your desired thickness.
  • Make ahead: Meatballs can be cooked ahead; reheat in gravy before serving.
