🧆 Swedish Meatballs
Swedish meatballs are tender, flavorful meatballs in a rich, creamy gravy, traditionally served over mashed potatoes, noodles, or lingonberry jam. They’re a comforting Scandinavian classic.
🥄 Ingredients (Serves 4–6)
Meatballs
- 1 lb ground beef
- ½ lb ground pork
- 1 small onion, finely grated
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- ¼ cup milk
- 1 egg
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- ¼ tsp ground allspice
- ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
Gravy
- 3 tbsp butter
- 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt & pepper, to taste
👩🍳 Instructions
1️⃣ Make Meatballs
- In a bowl, soak breadcrumbs in milk for a few minutes.
- Add ground meats, onion, egg, salt, pepper, allspice, and nutmeg. Mix until just combined.
- Form into 1–1½ inch meatballs.
2️⃣ Cook Meatballs
- Heat a skillet with 2 tbsp butter or oil over medium heat.
- Brown meatballs on all sides (they don’t need to cook through completely). Remove and set aside.
3️⃣ Make Gravy
- In the same skillet, melt butter.
- Whisk in flour to make a roux, cook 1–2 minutes.
- Slowly whisk in beef broth and cream. Simmer until thickened.
- Stir in Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
4️⃣ Combine
- Return meatballs to the gravy and simmer 10–15 minutes until cooked through.
5️⃣ Serve
- Over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.
- Optional: garnish with chopped parsley or serve with lingonberry jam.
