Steak and onions

Posted on March 24, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a simple, classic Steak and Onions recipe—juicy steak topped with caramelized onions, perfect for an easy dinner.

Steak and Onions

Ingredients (2–4 servings)

  • 1–1.5 lbs (450–680 g) steak (ribeye, sirloin, or your choice)
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the steak
    • Pat the steak dry and season both sides with salt and pepper.
    • Let it sit at room temperature for 15–20 minutes.
  2. Cook the onions
    • Heat 1 tbsp olive oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Add the sliced onions (and garlic, if using) and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden brown, about 10–15 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  3. Cook the steak
    • Add the remaining oil or butter to the skillet.
    • Sear the steak over medium-high heat for 3–5 minutes per side (depending on thickness and desired doneness).
    • Add Worcestershire sauce over the steak while cooking if desired.
  4. Combine and serve
    • Let the steak rest for 5 minutes after cooking.
    • Top with caramelized onions and garnish with fresh parsley.
    • Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or a side salad.

💡 Tips:

  • Use a cast-iron skillet for the best sear.
  • For extra flavor, add a splash of beef broth or red wine to deglaze the pan and make a quick pan sauce with the onions.
  • Leftover steak and onions are great in sandwiches or wraps.

If you want, I can also give a slow-cooker version where the steak becomes extra tender and infused with caramelized onion flavor—almost like a pot roast.

Do you want me to give that slow-cooker version?
