Here’s a classic Smothered Hamburger Steak recipe—juicy ground beef patties cooked in a rich, savory onion gravy. Perfect comfort food!
Ingredients (Serves 4)
For the Patties:
- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup milk
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
For the Gravy:
- 2 tbsp butter or oil
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Make the patties:
- In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, chopped onion, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Form into 4–6 oval or round patties.
- Brown the patties:
- Heat a skillet over medium-high heat with a little oil.
- Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side. They don’t need to be fully cooked yet. Remove and set aside.
- Make the onion gravy:
- In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced onions until soft and caramelized (~5–7 minutes).
- Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1–2 minutes to make a roux.
- Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer until thickened (~3–5 minutes). Season with salt and pepper.
- Smother the steaks:
- Return patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, cover, and simmer on low for 10–15 minutes until patties are fully cooked.
- Serve:
- Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles, spooning extra gravy on top.
✅ Tip: For a richer flavor, add a splash of cream or a little red wine to the gravy. You can also sauté mushrooms with the onions for a mushroom smothered variation.
I can also provide a slow cooker version that lets the patties cook gently all day for even more tender, juicy results.
