Shepherd’s pie

Posted on March 8, 2026 by Admin

Shepherd’s Pie is a classic comfort dish made with ground meat and vegetables topped with mashed potatoes and baked until golden.

Traditionally it uses lamb. When made with beef, it’s often called cottage pie.

🥧 Ingredients

For the meat filling

  • 500 g ground lamb or beef
  • 1 small onion (chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 cup mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon thyme or rosemary

For the mashed potato topping

  • 4–5 potatoes (peeled and chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • Salt

👨‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Boil potatoes
Cook potatoes in salted water for about 15 minutes until soft. Mash with butter, milk, and salt.
  2. Cook the meat
In a pan, sauté onion and garlic. Add ground meat and cook until browned.
  3. Add flavor
Stir in tomato paste, vegetables, broth, Worcestershire sauce, and herbs. Simmer 5–10 minutes until slightly thick.
  4. Assemble
Put the meat mixture into a baking dish. Spread mashed potatoes on top.
  5. Bake
Bake at 200°C (400°F) for about 20 minutes until the top is golden.

🍽️ Tips

  • Use a fork to make lines on the potatoes so they crisp in the oven.
  • Add cheese on top for a cheesy crust.
  • Some people mix cream or sour cream into the mashed potatoes for extra richness.
