🥧 Shepherd’s Pie (Classic Comfort Food)

Shepherd’s pie is a hearty British dish made with ground meat, vegetables, and a creamy mashed potato topping. (Technically, “shepherd’s pie” uses lamb; “cottage pie” uses beef.)

🛒 Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

Filling:

  • 1 lb ground lamb (or beef for cottage pie)
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or lamb broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp thyme or rosemary
  • Salt & pepper
  • 2 tbsp flour (for thickening)

Mashed Potato Topping:

  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled & chopped
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk or cream
  • Salt & pepper

🔥 Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Mashed Potatoes

  • Boil potatoes until tender (15–20 min).
  • Drain, mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Set aside.

2️⃣ Cook the Filling

  • SautĂŠ onion, carrots, and garlic until soft.
  • Add ground lamb and cook until browned.
  • Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes.
  • Add tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire, and herbs.
  • Simmer until thickened. Stir in peas at the end.

3️⃣ Assemble the Pie

  • Spread meat filling evenly in a baking dish.
  • Top with mashed potatoes, smoothing or using a fork to create peaks.

4️⃣ Bake

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Bake 20–25 minutes until the top is golden.

🌿 Tips & Variations

  • Cheesy topping: Sprinkle grated cheddar on top before baking.
  • Vegetarian version: Replace meat with lentils or mushrooms.
  • Extra flavor: Mash in roasted garlic or horseradish into potatoes.

If you want, I can also give you a slow cooker shepherd’s pie version where the filling simmers for hours before topping with mashed potatoes.

Do you want me to make that version?
