🥧 Shepherd’s Pie

Shepherd’s pie is a traditional British comfort dish made with seasoned minced lamb (or beef for cottage pie), topped with creamy mashed potatoes, and baked until golden and slightly crispy.

🛒 Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

Filling

  • 1 lb ground lamb (or beef for cottage pie)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup peas (fresh or frozen)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or lamb broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt & black pepper

Topping

  • 3–4 cups mashed potatoes (creamy, buttery)
  • 1–2 tbsp butter
  • Optional: shredded cheddar cheese for topping

🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Prepare the Filling

  1. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Sauté onion, carrots, and celery until softened, about 5–7 minutes.
  3. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds more.
  4. Add ground lamb, cook until browned.
  5. Stir in tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  6. Simmer 10–15 minutes until thickened.
  7. Stir in peas at the end.

2️⃣ Assemble

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Spoon meat filling into a baking dish.
  3. Spread mashed potatoes evenly on top.
  4. Optional: sprinkle shredded cheese.
  5. Use a fork to create ridges on the potato surface for crispiness.

3️⃣ Bake

  • Bake 20–25 minutes until the top is golden brown.
  • Optional: broil 2–3 minutes for extra browning.

🌟 Tips

  • Use leftover mashed potatoes for richer texture.
  • Add a splash of cream or butter to potatoes for extra creaminess.
  • Can be made ahead and baked later.
  • Cottage pie is the same dish but uses beef instead of lamb.

I can also give a slow-cooker shepherd’s pie version or a low-carb cauliflower-topped version if you want. Do you want me to?
