Shepherd’s pie

Posted on April 2, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic Shepherd’s Pie recipe—hearty, savory, and topped with creamy mashed potatoes 🥧🍖

🥔 Shepherd’s Pie

🧾 Ingredients (serves 4–6)

For the filling:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground lamb (or beef for a “cottage pie”)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or chicken broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp thyme (fresh or dried)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 1–2 tbsp oil for cooking

For the topping:

  • 4 cups mashed potatoes (prepared with butter, milk, salt, and pepper)
  • Optional: ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Preheat oven

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

2. Cook the filling

  1. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Sauté onions and carrots until softened (5–7 minutes).
  3. Add garlic and cook 1 minute.
  4. Add ground lamb (or beef) and cook until browned.
  5. Stir in tomato paste, broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  6. Simmer 5–10 minutes until slightly thickened.
  7. Stir in peas and remove from heat.

3. Assemble the pie

  • Spread meat and vegetable filling evenly in a baking dish.
  • Top with mashed potatoes, spreading smoothly or using a fork to create texture.
  • Optional: sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top.

4. Bake

  • Bake 20–25 minutes until topping is golden and filling is bubbling.

5. Serve

  • Let cool 5 minutes before serving.

💡 Tips

  • Creamy potatoes: Use butter, cream, or milk to make mashed potatoes extra rich.
  • Vegetarian version: Substitute lentils or mushrooms for the meat.
  • Extra flavor: Add a splash of soy sauce or balsamic vinegar to the filling.

🍽️ Variations

  • Cottage pie: Same recipe but with ground beef instead of lamb.
  • Cheesy shepherd’s pie: Mix cheese into mashed potatoes before topping.
  • Sweet potato topping: Replace mashed potatoes with mashed sweet potatoes for a twist.

I can also give a quick 30-minute stovetop shepherd’s pie that skips the oven but is still hearty and comforting 🍖🥔.
