Shepherd’s pie

Shepherd’s pie 🥔🥧 is a classic British and Irish comfort dish made with minced meat and vegetables topped with mashed potatoes, then baked until golden.

Traditionally it uses lamb, while versions made with beef are often called Cottage pie.


Ingredients

Filling

  • 500 g ground lamb (or beef)
  • 1 small onion (chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 cup diced carrots
  • ½ cup peas
  • 1 tbsp Tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or lamb broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper

Potato Topping

  • 3 cups Mashed potatoes
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ½ cup shredded Cheddar cheese (optional)

How to Make Shepherd’s Pie

1. Cook the filling

  1. Heat a pan and cook onion and garlic until soft.
  2. Add ground lamb and cook until browned.
  3. Stir in carrots, peas, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and broth.
  4. Simmer 10 minutes until slightly thick.

2. Prepare the topping

  • Mix mashed potatoes with butter and milk until creamy.

3. Assemble

  1. Spread the meat mixture in a baking dish.
  2. Cover with mashed potatoes.
  3. Sprinkle cheddar cheese on top (optional).

4. Bake

  • Bake at 200°C (400°F) for 20–25 minutes until the top is golden.
