Scalloped potatoes

Posted on March 13, 2026 by Admin

Scalloped Potatoes are a classic baked side dish made with thinly sliced potatoes baked in a creamy sauce until tender and golden. They’re rich, comforting, and often served with roast meats or holiday meals.

Ingredients (serves 4–6)

  • 2 lbs potatoes (Yukon Gold or russet), thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced (optional)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional for a cheesy version)

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Lightly grease a baking dish.

2. Make the cream sauce

  • In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
  • Stir in flour and cook for about 1 minute.
  • Slowly whisk in milk and cook until the sauce thickens.
  • Add salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

3. Layer the potatoes

  • Arrange a layer of sliced potatoes in the baking dish.
  • Pour some sauce over the potatoes.
  • Repeat layers until everything is used.

4. Add cheese (optional)

  • Sprinkle cheese on top if making cheesy scalloped potatoes.

5. Bake

  • Cover with foil and bake 30 minutes.
  • Remove foil and bake another 25–30 minutes until potatoes are tender and the top is golden.

6. Rest and serve

  • Let sit 10 minutes before serving so the sauce thickens.

💡 Tips

  • Slice potatoes thin and evenly so they cook properly.
  • For richer flavor, replace some milk with heavy cream.
  • Add ham or bacon pieces to turn it into a full meal.

If you’d like, I can also show you the difference between scalloped potatoes and potatoes au gratin (many people mix them up) and how to make the restaurant-style version. 🥔🧀
