Scalloped potatoes

Posted on February 13, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic, creamy scalloped potatoes recipe — tender potatoes baked in a cheesy, velvety sauce.

🥔 Classic Scalloped Potatoes

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs (about 4–5 medium) potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese (divided)
  • Optional: ¼ teaspoon paprika for topping

Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat Oven

  • Preheat to 375°F (190°C).
  • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

2️⃣ Make the Cheese Sauce

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
  2. Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes until lightly golden.
  3. Gradually whisk in milk.
  4. Cook, stirring constantly, until sauce thickens (~5 minutes).
  5. Remove from heat and stir in 1 cup cheese until melted.
  6. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

3️⃣ Layer Potatoes

  1. Arrange half the sliced potatoes in the baking dish.
  2. Pour half the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
  3. Repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce.

4️⃣ Bake

  1. Cover with foil and bake 30 minutes.
  2. Remove foil, sprinkle remaining ½ cup cheese on top.
  3. Bake uncovered 25–30 more minutes, until potatoes are tender and top is golden.

5️⃣ Serve

  • Let cool 5–10 minutes before serving.
  • Optional garnish: chopped parsley or chives.

Tips & Variations

  • For extra flavor, add sautéed onions or garlic between layers.
  • Substitute half-and-half or cream for a richer sauce.
  • Sprinkle paprika or Parmesan on top for a golden crust.

If you want, I can also give a faster, one-skillet stovetop version that’s creamy and requires less baking. Do you want that version?
