Salisbury steak meatballs are tender beef meatballs cooked in a rich onion-mushroom gravy, inspired by the classic American comfort dish. They’re great with mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles. 🍽️🥩
Ingredients
For the meatballs
- 500 g ground beef
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 small onion (finely chopped)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tbsp oil (for frying)
For the gravy
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
- 1 small onion (sliced)
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp flour or cornstarch (to thicken)
- Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
- Make the meatballs
In a bowl mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Form into medium-size meatballs. - Brown the meatballs
Heat oil in a pan and cook the meatballs for about 5–7 minutes, turning until browned on all sides. Remove and set aside. - Prepare the gravy
In the same pan melt butter. Add sliced onions and mushrooms and cook until soft. - Add liquid
Pour in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup. Stir well. - Thicken
Mix flour or cornstarch with a little water and stir into the gravy. - Simmer
Return meatballs to the pan and simmer for 10–15 minutes until fully cooked and the gravy thickens.
