Salisbury steak

Posted on January 30, 2026 by Admin

Ah, Salisbury Steak—old-school comfort food done right. Juicy beef patties simmered in rich mushroom-onion gravy. Here’s a classic, home-style recipe:

Ingredients

Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ⅓ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon or yellow mustard
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp oil (for browning)

Gravy:

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the Patties
    • In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire, mustard, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Shape into 4–6 oval patties.
  2. Brown the Steaks
    • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side (don’t cook through).
    • Remove and set aside.
  3. Make the Gravy
    • In the same skillet, melt butter.
    • Add onions and mushrooms; cook 5–7 minutes until softened and lightly browned.
    • Sprinkle in flour and stir 1 minute.
    • Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
    • Simmer until thickened.
  4. Simmer Together
    • Return patties to skillet.
    • Spoon gravy over the top.
    • Cover and simmer 10–15 minutes until patties are cooked through.
  5. Serve
    • Serve hot over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.

Tips & Variations

  • For extra tender patties, don’t overmix the meat.
  • Add a splash of cream or milk to the gravy for richness.
  • No mushrooms? Onion-only gravy works great too.
  • Leftovers reheat beautifully.

If you want, I can also give you a slow-cooker Salisbury steak, a TV-dinner style version, or a cheesy Salisbury steak bake 🍽️
