🥩 Salisbury Steak

Salisbury steak is a classic comfort dish made from seasoned ground beef patties cooked in a rich brown onion-mushroom gravy. Despite the name, it’s not a steak—it’s more like a fancy hamburger steak.

🧾 Ingredients

For the patties:

  • 500g ground beef
  • 1 small onion (finely grated or chopped)
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional but traditional)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 onion (sliced)
  • 1 cup mushrooms (sliced, optional)
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth (or stock cube + water)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Make the patties

  • Mix ground beef, onion, egg, breadcrumbs, milk, and seasonings
  • Shape into oval patties (like mini steaks)

2. Brown the patties

  • Heat a pan with a little oil
  • Sear patties 3–4 minutes per side until browned
  • Remove and set aside (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet)

3. Make the gravy

  • In the same pan, melt butter
  • Sauté onions (and mushrooms if using) until soft
  • Stir in flour and cook 1 minute
  • Slowly add beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps
  • Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper

4. Simmer

  • Return patties to the pan
  • Cover and simmer for 15–20 minutes until cooked through and tender
  • Sauce will thicken as it cooks

🍽️ Serving Ideas:

  • Mashed potatoes 🥔
  • Steamed rice
  • Buttered noodles
  • Green beans or peas

🔥 Tips:

  • Don’t overmix beef or patties will become tough
  • Let gravy simmer slowly for best flavor
  • Add a splash of cream for a richer sauce

🌟 Variations:

  • Add bell peppers for extra flavor
  • Use chicken mince for a lighter version
  • Make spicy with chili flakes or black pepper

If you want, I can give you a fast 20-minute Salisbury steak, a restaurant-style thick gravy version, or a healthy baked version 👍
