🥩 Salisbury Steak

Salisbury steak is a comforting, classic American dish: seasoned ground beef patties smothered in rich onion and mushroom gravy. Perfect served with mashed potatoes or rice.


🥄 Ingredients

For the Patties

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

For the Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup sliced onions
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Patties

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  2. Shape into 4 oval patties.

2️⃣ Cook the Patties

  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat with a little oil.
  2. Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.

3️⃣ Make the Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté onions (and mushrooms) until soft.
  2. Sprinkle flour over onions and cook 1–2 minutes.
  3. Gradually stir in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  4. Simmer until thickened, about 5–7 minutes.

4️⃣ Combine

  1. Return patties to the skillet.
  2. Spoon gravy over them and simmer 10 minutes until patties are cooked through.

🍽️ Serving Tips

  • Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley for color.
  • Add a side of steamed vegetables like green beans or carrots.

  • Do not overmix the beef to keep patties tender.
  • For extra flavor, add a dash of soy sauce or a splash of red wine to the gravy.
