Salisbury steak

Here’s a classic, hearty recipe for Salisbury Steak, in true comfort-food style:

Ingredients

For the steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Optional: sautéed mushrooms for extra flavor

Instructions

  1. Make the steaks:
In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Form into oval patties (about 4–6).
  2. Brown the patties:
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook patties 3–4 minutes per side until browned (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet). Remove and set aside.
  3. Make the gravy:
In the same skillet, melt butter. Sprinkle in flour and stir for 1–2 minutes to make a roux. Gradually whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer until thickened.
  4. Combine and simmer:
Return patties to the skillet. Cover and simmer 15–20 minutes until patties are cooked through and the gravy is flavorful.
  5. Serve:
Spoon gravy over patties. Classic sides include mashed potatoes, green beans, or buttered noodles.

💡 Tips:

  • For extra richness, add a splash of cream or milk to the gravy.
  • Mushrooms can be sautéed in the pan before making the gravy for a deeper flavor.
  • Leftovers taste amazing in a sandwich!

If you want, I can also give a baked Salisbury steak casserole version, which is perfect if you want it all in one dish. Do you want me to do that?
