Salisbury steak is a classic comfort-food dish that’s essentially seasoned ground beef patties served with a rich brown gravy, often over mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice. Despite the name, it’s more like a hamburger steak than an actual steak.
Ingredients (Serves 4):
For the patties:
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the gravy:
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Optional: sautéed mushrooms
Instructions:
- Prepare the patties:
In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Form into 4 oval patties. - Brown the patties:
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and brown patties on both sides (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet). Remove and set aside. - Make the gravy:
In the same skillet, melt butter. Stir in flour to make a roux, cooking 1–2 minutes. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce until smooth. Simmer until slightly thickened. Add mushrooms if using. - Simmer the patties:
Return patties to the skillet, cover, and simmer on low heat 15–20 minutes until fully cooked and flavors meld. - Serve:
Spoon gravy over the patties and serve with mashed potatoes, noodles, or green vegetables.
Optional tip: For a slow-cooker version, you can brown the patties, place them in the crockpot, pour gravy over them, and cook on low 4–5 hours for ultra-tender results.
I can also give a lighter, skillet-only version that’s quicker for weeknights if you want. Do you want that?
