Here’s a classic, comforting Salisbury Steak recipe — tender beef patties smothered in rich onion and mushroom gravy.

🥩 Salisbury Steak

Ingredients (Serves 4)

Steaks:

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Gravy:

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced (optional but traditional)
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Patties

  • In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Form into 4 oval patties.

2️⃣ Brown the Steaks

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned.
  • Remove from skillet and set aside (they’ll finish cooking in the gravy).

3️⃣ Make the Gravy

  • In the same skillet, melt butter.
  • Add onions and mushrooms; cook until softened and lightly browned (5–7 minutes).
  • Sprinkle flour over vegetables and cook 1 minute.
  • Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Simmer until thickened.

4️⃣ Simmer Together

  • Return patties to skillet.
  • Cover and simmer 10–15 minutes until cooked through and tender.

5️⃣ Serve

  • Spoon gravy over patties.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.

Tips & Variations

  • Extra tender: Add 2 tbsp milk to the beef mixture.
  • Deeper flavor: Add a splash of soy sauce or a pinch of thyme to gravy.
  • Make-ahead: Tastes even better the next day.
  • Oven finish: After browning, bake in gravy at 350°F (175°C) for 20 minutes.

If you’d like, I can also give you a homestyle TV-dinner style Salisbury steak version with extra thick brown gravy.
