🥩 Salisbury Steak

Salisbury steak is a classic American comfort dish: seasoned ground beef patties smothered in rich, savory brown gravy. Traditionally served with mashed potatoes and vegetables, it’s hearty, filling, and perfect for weeknight dinners.


🥄 Ingredients (Serves 4)

For the Patties

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

For the Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • Salt & pepper to taste

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Make Patties

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, onion, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Form into 4 evenly sized oval patties.

2️⃣ Brown Patties

  • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat with a little oil or butter.
  • Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side (they do not need to be fully cooked). Remove and set aside.

3️⃣ Make Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter.
  2. Whisk in flour and cook 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and onion powder.
  4. Simmer 5 minutes until slightly thickened. Season with salt and pepper.

4️⃣ Combine

  • Return patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over the top.
  • Cover and simmer 10–15 minutes until patties are cooked through (internal temp 160°F / 71°C).

5️⃣ Serve

  • Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles with extra gravy on top.

  • Tender patties: Don’t overmix meat; handle gently.
  • Flavor boost: Sauté onions and mushrooms in gravy for extra depth.
  • Make ahead: Patties can be formed ahead and refrigerated.
  • Gravy variations: Add a splash of red wine or a teaspoon of Dijon mustard for richer flavor.
