Here’s a classic, comforting Salisbury Steak recipe — juicy beef patties smothered in rich onion mushroom gravy 🍽️🥩✨


Salisbury Steak

Serves: 4
Time: ~40 minutes


Ingredients

For the Steaks:

  • 1½ lbs (680 g) ground beef
  • ⅓ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

For the Gravy:

  • 1 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional but traditional)
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

1️⃣ Make the Patties

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and seasonings.
  • Mix gently and form into 4 oval patties.

2️⃣ Brown the Steaks

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat.
  • Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).
  • Remove from skillet and set aside.

3️⃣ Make the Gravy

  • In the same skillet, add butter if needed.
  • Sauté onions and mushrooms until softened.
  • Sprinkle flour over vegetables and stir for 1–2 minutes.
  • Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Simmer until thickened, about 3–5 minutes.

4️⃣ Simmer Together

  • Return patties to the skillet.
  • Cover and simmer 10–15 minutes until cooked through and gravy thickens.

5️⃣ Serve

  • Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
  • Spoon extra gravy on top.

Tips & Variations

  • Add a splash of heavy cream for a richer gravy.
  • Mix a tablespoon of Dijon mustard into the beef mixture for depth.
  • For extra flavor, caramelize the onions longer before making the gravy.
