🍽️ Hamburger Steak with Onions and Gravy

A classic comfort dish: juicy beef patties cooked in a rich onion gravy. It’s simple, hearty, and perfect with mashed potatoes or rice.

🥩 Ingredients

For the hamburger steaks

  • 500 g (1 lb) ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)

For the onion gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Make the patties

  1. In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, chopped onion, garlic, salt, pepper, paprika, and Worcestershire sauce.
  2. Mix gently and shape into 4 oval patties.

2️⃣ Cook the steaks

  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat with a little oil.
  2. Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned.
  3. Remove from pan and set aside (they will finish cooking in the gravy).

3️⃣ Make the onion gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter and add sliced onions.
  2. Cook until soft and caramelized (about 8–10 minutes).
  3. Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1 minute.
  4. Slowly add beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps.
  5. Add Worcestershire sauce and simmer until thickened.

4️⃣ Finish the dish

  1. Return the patties to the skillet.
  2. Spoon gravy over them and simmer 10 minutes until cooked through.
