Here’s a hearty Hamburger Potato Casserole recipe — creamy, cheesy, and perfect for a comforting weeknight meal. 🥔🥩🧀

Hamburger Potato Casserole Recipe

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 4–5 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or a mix of cheeses)
  • 1 can (10.5 oz / 300 g) cream of mushroom soup (or cream of celery for variation)
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: garlic powder, paprika, or dried herbs

Instructions

1. Preheat Oven

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish.

2. Cook the Ground Beef

  1. In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onion and sauté until soft (3–4 minutes).
  3. Add ground beef, season with salt, pepper, and optional garlic powder.
  4. Cook until browned, breaking up meat with a spoon.
  5. Drain excess fat if needed.

3. Prepare the Creamy Sauce

  • In a bowl, mix the can of cream soup with milk until smooth.
  • Optional: season with a little extra salt, pepper, or paprika.

4. Layer the Casserole

  1. Spread half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the casserole dish.
  2. Add half of the cooked ground beef mixture over the potatoes.
  3. Pour half of the soup mixture over the top.
  4. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheese.
  5. Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, beef, soup, and top with remaining cheese.

5. Bake

  1. Cover casserole with aluminum foil.
  2. Bake for 45 minutes, then remove foil and bake another 15–20 minutes until potatoes are tender and cheese is golden.
  3. Let casserole rest 5–10 minutes before serving to firm up.

Tips

  • For extra flavor, add frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn) between layers.
  • Use red potatoes or Yukon gold for creamier texture.
  • Make ahead: assemble casserole and refrigerate overnight; bake next day, adding ~10 extra minutes.

If you want, I can also make a one-pot skillet version of this Hamburger Potato Casserole that cooks entirely on the stovetop for faster cleanup.

Do you want me to do that version too?
