French Onion Meatloaf

Posted on February 5, 2026 by Admin

Ohhh yes 😏—French Onion Meatloaf is basically meatloaf leveled up with caramelized onions and rich, melty cheese vibes. Here’s a detailed, cozy recipe you can try:

French Onion Meatloaf

Ingredients

  • 1½ lbs ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork for extra juiciness)
  • 1 cup French onion soup (canned or homemade)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1–2 tbsp butter or oil

Optional topping

  • Additional French onion soup or a few slices of cheese melted on top

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions
    • Heat butter or oil in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Cook sliced onions until soft and golden brown (~15–20 min), stirring occasionally.
  2. Preheat oven
    • Oven to 350°F (175°C).
  3. Mix meatloaf
    • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, garlic powder, Worcestershire, salt & pepper, and half of the French onion soup.
    • Fold in ½ cup of shredded cheese.
  4. Form loaf
    • Shape mixture into a loaf and place in a greased baking dish.
  5. Top it
    • Spread caramelized onions on top of the meatloaf.
    • Pour remaining French onion soup over the top, then sprinkle remaining cheese.
  6. Bake
    • Bake 55–65 minutes, or until internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
    • Optional: broil 2–3 min at the end for a golden cheese top.
  7. Rest & serve
    • Let rest 5–10 min before slicing.
    • Serve with mashed potatoes, roasted veggies, or a side salad.

💡 Tips & Tricks

  • Use a mix of ground beef and pork for a moister loaf.
  • Caramelized onions can be made a day ahead to save time.
  • Add fresh thyme or parsley to the meat mixture for an herby kick.
  • Leftovers make amazing sandwiches on toasted bread with extra cheese 😏.

If you want, I can also give a slow cooker version that’s basically dump-and-go, perfect if you want hands-off cooking but still get all that French onion flavor.

Do you want the slow cooker version?
